All Quiet From the perspective of the Allied forces, expect to fight in many of WWII's most famous air battles all throughout Europe, including the Battle of Britain plus theaters in Sicily, Stalingrad, Berlin and Korsun. And yes, the game will support flight stick peripherals. According to Gaijin Entertainment reps, Birds of Prey's easiest mode (which eliminates the possibility for common flight mishaps like engine stalls or tailspins) will still be considerably more realistic than the most detailed console flight combat games out there. More lenient modes will allow for external camera views and feature helpful overlays that indicate in-game elements like enemy targets and friendly wingmates. If you play on "realistic" mode, you'll be restricted to a cockpit view, and your only guides will be instrument readings.

Gear Lust Birds of Prey is utilizing the very same flight model that powers the PC Sturmovik games, with controls shoehorned into console gamepads. It's this bold disregard for the careful, plodding moves that we associate with domestic publishers that makes one want to pay attention to 1c, as well as to its perhaps ill-advised but nonetheless technically stunning flight sim.

But you can't help but feel that it's perhaps a little ill-advised to market a hardcore flight sim to people whose experience with the genre probably doesn't go any further than Blazing Angels. It's understandable in a sense that 1c would endeavor to bring its hottest property to a wide, console-based audience. This is what makes the existence of IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey (due out sometime next year for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) so baffling and fascinating. And even if it did, you would expect it to play like a shade of its source material when all was said and done (say, a 1942-ified top-down shooter, sold for proprietary funnymoney over proprietary online marketplaces).

In short, it's the last series you'd imagine would come to consoles. Its flight models are severely realistic, and its damage models will have you imagining mechanical shortcuts where none actually exist. It's one of the rare World War II games set in the Eastern Front, and as a result is populated by hosts of aircrafts that people who've watched "Pearl Harbor" and "Flags of our Fathers" will have never heard of.

Where other flight simulators make concessions for casual gamers (by including sexy, well-known aircraft, for instance, or incorporating fast-and-loose "free flight" modes), Sturmovik remains unapologetically true to its fastidious audience. Talk to someone who's seriously into IL-2 Sturmovik for a few minutes and you'll likely come away having reassessed what it means to be completely and earnestly into a game. But this will deter only those who do not truly yearn to fly with their computers. When it comes to PC flight sims, there are multitudes of obstacles preventing everyday gamers from donning the aviator specs and modulating their voices to a first officer's crisp, even beyond their seemingly impenetrable mechanics and expensive controller requirements. Separate throttles with more buttons than a Power Glove.
